Feeding Hope: Inside Our Easter Mission to Kiwunya’s Most Needy Households
Easter is more than a date on the calendar; it’s a sacred season of renewal, reflection, and the deep reminder of hope born through love and sacrifice. At Last Resort Foundation, we didn’t want this season to pass with only words and well wishes. We believed it should be felt especially by those who are often forgotten. So we took the message of Easter into action through our Easter Food Outreach in Kiwunya Zone VIII, a community nestled on the edges of Kampala, burdened by daily hardship and chronic poverty.
In this informal settlement, families struggle not only to pay rent or find work but to put food on the table. With food prices continuing to rise and job opportunities scarce, many households particularly the elderly, widows, persons with disabilities, and single-parent families were facing Easter with empty cupboards and weary hearts. They had no idea where their next meal would come from.
We couldn’t look away. Instead, we showed up not with fanfare or cameras, but with compassion, dignity, and presence. Fueled by the generosity of our supporters and guided by our mission to restore dignity, our team walked through the dusty paths of Kiwunya carrying more than just food packages. We brought the message of Christ’s love not preached from a pulpit, but expressed through practical care and heartfelt conversations. Each food parcel handed over was a reminder: You are not alone. You are valued. And you are loved.
“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” – Matthew 25:40 (NIV)
Behind Every Door: A Story Worth Hearing

More than 25 vulnerable households were lovingly reached during this Easter outreach among them were the elderly, widows, persons with disabilities, and struggling low-income families. But what we delivered went far beyond bags of food; each package carried something deeper: a message of worth, dignity, and remembrance. It was a gentle but powerful assurance that you are seen, valued, and not forgotten.
One of the recipients a 78-year-old widow who lives alone in a crumbling single-room shelter, received her package with trembling hands. Her eyes welled up as she softly whispered:
“I didn’t expect anyone to remember me. I thought I would spend Easter in silence… But you brought food and you brought God’s love.”
In moments like these, we saw that our presence and compassion meant as much as the food itself if not more.
Why Food Security Matters And Why Presence Heals
According to the World Food Programme, more than 343 million live with food insecurity, a crisis that hits hardest in urban informal settlements like Kiwunya, where the struggle for a daily meal is real and relentless. Many families rely on casual, informal jobs that vanish during the holiday seasons, leaving them vulnerable and uncertain.

But food is more than sustenance; it’s a symbol of dignity, belonging, and hope. A simple food parcel, thoughtfully given, can remind someone that their life matters. It says you are not forgotten.
That’s why our volunteers didn’t just deliver food and walk away. They stayed. They sat, prayed, and listened. In a world that moves too fast, we choose to slow down and be fully present because sometimes, presence itself is the most powerful form of healing.
What We Delivered
Each household received a food package containing:
- Maize flour
- Rice
- Sugar
- Cooking oil
- Soap and essential hygiene supplies
We also conducted nutrition and hygiene awareness sessions, empowering families with simple health practices they can use daily, especially vital in vulnerable homes where illnesses can easily escalate.
It Takes a Village to Feed Hope
This mission would not have been possible without the united effort of many hearts and hands. Every step of this Easter outreach was powered by compassion, selflessness, and community spirit.
Our local volunteers generously gave their time, strength, and presence. They walked from home to home with love in their hearts and food in their hands, embodying the true spirit of service.
Our faithful donors believed deeply in the power of nourishing both body and spirit. Their generous contributions made it possible to purchase and distribute every single food parcel, bringing hope where it was needed most.

Community leaders and elders played a vital role by guiding our efforts with wisdom and insight. Their local knowledge helped us ensure that help reached the most overlooked and vulnerable households.
